Not OP, but the budget should contain anything you are realistically going to spend money on. Sorry if this is rambling, keep those questions coming You can try it, and if you end up having to take money from it in order to fund something non-negotiable, then you know those items needed more money in the budget, and the fun category needed less. How do you know you’re ready for a fun spending category? Well. But at the beginning it can also kinda feel like a wide open void. No ones ynab looks the same, and everyone has different priorities and ways to map it out. Moving the money around is what makes ynab work though too.Ī family we know who uses ynab has a different take, and they fund appropriately. Also, I have yet to have a month where I didn’t have to move money around, and we’ve been at this a year now. Personally, My spouse and I are aggressively paying down debt, so we have exactly one month paid forward (which includes a bucket for yearly bills, like our car registrations, plus Christmas, medical issue fund, car maintenance, and replacement funds). The ynab philosophy is that you don’t do that until you are at least a month ahead. If it is t funded enough for that purchase, you don’t.Īs far as when you start budgeting for fun stuff or item replacement, etc, that’s going to depend on you and your goals. If that says you have money for that purchase, you do. So one way to always make sure you don’t feel like you have money is to not look at the balance of your bank account.
